The beautiful and idyllic island Ilosaari has been the recreational oasis and meeting place for Joensuu inhabitants throughout the ages. The central location of the island in the heart of the city and the stunning landscape of the river Pielisjoki have attracted people to relax, swim and participate in the events organised on the island. Annually in Ilosaari are organised concerts and festivals for a couple of thousands people, such as Ilovaarirock, Vekararokki and Supasoul. Ilosaari provides ideal and flexible setting for organisation of summer, and also winter outdoor events. For example, in 2011 in the lagoon of Ilosaari was organised the world championship of ice swimming. There is also a stationary stage and mixing facilities.
